I read so much about this case and I myself thought of writing something about it myself. I have planned nothing before writing this, so the words written down there is straight from my heart and not compromised or moderated by my brains. That is the reason what I'm writing here is what I honestly think.
That girl lived in a society, or so she thought. It wasn't any small town, but the capital of the largest democracy on planet Earth. She was not only raped by six inhuman men, but also murdered by them in a moving bus. She died even though she wanted to live after the grave injuries she received.
The dead exist in past. We should tend to our futures. But this is not as straight forward as that. To make our future safe, we MUST find out what went wrong in past. We see many people around us who can be blamed. Judiciary, legislature and executives, are they to be blamed? The rapists are no doubt the foremost culprits, but is their anyone else who should share the blame?
But first of all, you should know that throwing blame on faces around you is a sign of weakness. You must do what is right if you want to make a change that is worthwhile. Do not believe in what you hear from others entirely. Their have been many things that have been exaggerated all this while and many of these exaggerations have out-shaded the facts. Know exactly what happened and be judge for yourself.
Keeping the plain facts foremost in mind I'd like to proceed. I'm sure most of you reading this won't go out at nights raping the girls you see around. But for those who would do so, I'd like to tell you that you shouldn't do it. If you are thinking why I have such a lenient view about it, it is because change can take place only if we change the hearts of people, and not by striking fear in them by threatening them. They are not yet criminals and and we desperately need to change the mentality of the people in our country. For those who are already marked as criminals, trust me people, I would do my worst with them if it was in my hands.
Ours is a country in which women would normally hesitate to go out alone during night time because of fear of rapists. Is procession enough? Is passing of laws enough? Is burning candles to show your support or liking, sharing and commenting on pictures on social media enough? I'll give a straight forward answer to it.
No.
Rape is a social evil. Everybody knows that. But to stop it, we need to change our thinking about girls and women in our country. We have to change our mentality.
I heard some girl comment during this current case, "Even if I walk naked on the streets, it doesn't give anyone permission to rape me."
Grow up. Do you expect to come back after a normal day if you walk out on the streets of a busy city completely nude? Your dress is a really big factor unless everyone on the streets changes their thinking about it.
Now if you don't like the comment I made above by me, here is another one you might not like. If you are out late night or alone, should you not have proper information about how you can get back home? You can do something to prevent it, but you wont do it. You be ignorant and you'll yourself be a victim someday. They are calling such a girl brave now who was out of her house and did not know how to get back. She was in the wrong place, with wrong people and at wrong time. Tell me she couldn't help any of it and I will stab you for lying.
Its true that rape is a crime and I'm not backing rapists. But rape in a normal situation is not a planned crime. So a lot of things can be done to prevent it. But you will not do it because you don't like restrictions. And when you are in trouble, their is everyone else to blame, but yourself.
It is a shame that when the girl was thrown out of the bus, no one immediately came to help her. This is the type of society we live in. Now those same people protest. What are they protesting against? What change can they bring about, those who can't help someone in desperate need? These same people find every one else around them to blame. Where were they when a simple act of humanity could have helped that poor girl to a great extent? They were busy in their fast flowing life.
That girl was an example of ignorance leading to death and inhumanity of
the people of our country, not someone who sacrificed her life for
anything.
You don't need laws to mark rape as crime. You don't need cops to stop rapes. You need to change yourself and people around you to make this country a little safer. And changing yourself does not only meaning not committing any crime, but also helping someone who needs it. Change yourself and the environment around you and make the place you live in safer for our good ladies. For the ladies - I'm not telling you to snap your freedom. All you need to know is what your limits are and be practical while thinking about it.
